At least I think she is. She got back from uni one Sunday in early June, jammed the washing machine with a term’s accumulated laundry, raided my piggy bank to the tune of several hundred quid on the understanding that the money will be repaid from some unspecified holiday job undertaken at some uncertain date in the future, spent 36 hours in telephonic discussion with various like-minded free spirits on the ominous subject (I couldn’t help overhearing) of the rave scene in Bangkok and Koh Samui — and then hoosh! By Tuesday evening she was on a plane to the Far East, having acquired a suspiciously cheap ticket on an obscure Indian airline from a bucket-shop in Willesden.

Since then I have been able to follow her progress in one of two ways. It depends on whether I crave a false sense of reassurance, or feel strong enough to cope with the hideously unexpurgated truth. If it’s the former, I consult her intermittent e-mails to us, which are crafted with quite brilliant cunning (a career as a spin-doctor surely awaits) to suggest that her Thai sojourn is crammed with visits to old temples, detailed study of local flora, and discussions about the Buddhist path to enlightenment.

Unfortunately for her, my older son let slip the information that if I logged onto a website called MySpace.com and typed in my daughter’s name, I would be able to read her Thai “blog”. This gives a rather more colourful account of her trip:

June 10: “Woohoooo! went out on the razz last night — strange but wikid all the same!” June 12: “Got REALLY cool tattoo. My name in thai letters init. Paha!” June 16: “Keep getting really drunk at night, coming back to beach and going skiny dipping. Soooo much fun!” June 19: “Rented moped, soooo cool! Fell off coz i got confused! Proper blonde moment.” June 24: “Had bad accident on moped... cant walk properly but the show must go on...” June 28: “Lying on beach nursing hangover whilst eating rat on a stick. Let the good times roll... hahaha.” July 3: “Out on the town. It was MESSY. We were all trashed and ended up at this weird place...” July 13: “Best party ever! the most INSANE 24hrs of my life. Wooooo!”

PR MySpace

Statistics, lies and damned Rubel

The Rubloid has just written a post on the findings of the Pew Internet & American Life Project (Reuters via Yahoo).

It's yet another great example of a blogger (with a particular Me2 axe to grind) blindly seizing on stats to substantiate a particular evangelical POV.

What Rubel fails to point out (which the Reuters article does - albeit burried at the bottom of the story), is that Pew surveyed "233 self-identified bloggers " by telephone. Hardly a representative sample size and a pretty crucial piece of information for readers to guide them on how to interpret the voracity of the findings.

Whether Rubel is correct or not in his analysis of the future of the blogosphere (his crystal balls would explain why he walks gingerly), it underscores the lack of 'depth' of most bloggers.

To use one of his favourite blog bullsh*t bingo buzzwords, as the social media landscape 'flattens', so the critical use of sources gets squeezed out at the edges.

It's left the PR Monkey scratching his hairy behind in ponder, wondering whether this form of evangelical 'the message is more important than the true representation of the facts' type posting only serves to undermine the value and credibility of the post and the blogger.

Rubel has had a considerable amount of flack about his verging-on-the-arrogant dismissal of Dell's new blog. So perhaps the halo of this self-styled champion of Me2 is starting to tarnish under the weight of critical scrutiny - something he perhaps lacks in his own postings.

PR stats

So close you can almost smell his little bunny balls

The PR Monkey has been a whisker away from snaring the Spin Bunny for one last JLC-esque celebrity post. Drew B then left a comment at 10:10pm, probably dressed in his smoking jacket and slippers.

So in honour of these two blog-a-holics, here's my top five social tools for Saturday Night 2.0:

Pub 2.0 - essential Saturday night venue for extended conversations (usually about complete b*****cks). Lubricated by drink, conversations can often be controversial and break vital news (Dave's just yacked). Often populated by Drunk 2.0

Beer.a.licious - a great tool for extending and upgrading Pub 2.0 conversations from reasonable and decorous to shambolic and shouty

Curry 2.0 - losing market share to Kebablines, but still a favourite amongst old skool social conversationalists. Content can be difficult to differentiate and most users remain unsure of the type / origins of the 'meat'. Can also cause Pophurls (see below)

Pophurls - a common outcome of Pub 2.0 conversations. Can lead to colourful pavement decorations and upset girlfriends / wives

Day after analytics - a handy tool for Sunday lunchtime pub gatherings. Allows users to analyse preceeding night's fun and frolics, and identify the most embarrassing shenanigans including Moose 2.0 and Pophurls. Also keeps an (unrealiable) track on the amount of unique Beer.a.licious consumed.

PR tagging

Bring Back campaign gathers momentum

The PR Monkey's Justin Lee Collins campaign to bring back Spin Bunny and the World of High Tech PR is rocking.

Thanks to everyone who has sent messages of support and Mr Guest who posted the story on Crispy News. Which is a pity.

There's been a couple of recent BadHack-like stories over at Getting Ink, the: 101's blog (www.gettingink.typepad.com) - maybe Gary and Sally are in a better position to spill the beans?

Get in there!

Badhack needs your support, let's get this baby back on the road.

PR badhack JLC

Bring back badhack

Where for art thou badhack?

Cribbing from Justin Lee Collins, the PR Monkey is starting a campaign to bring back badhack. His fresh-faced enthusiasm for the PR industry and blogging is charming and, somethimes, infectious.

His latest post on the state of the PR blogosphere reveals some interesting stats.

According to Stephen's sources, there are only 19 UK PR practitioner blogs and 6 self-styled UK blog consultant blogs.

And this information is from Edelman's latest Me2Revolution recruit.

But clearly it isn't Me2, is it. Not with only 25 professionals bothering to blog.

With 44,000 professionals in the industry, only 0.0005% blog. It's phenomena, I tell ya. A 2,000% year-on-year increase in numbers could result in a staggering 1% blogging! Woohoo!

It makes the PR monkey feel priveleged to be one of the few.

PR Blogs

Something doesn't add up here

There's been some chat in the PR blogosphere about the analysis Hitwise has done on influence of blogger Iain Dale on the Prescott Affair.

See Drew B and Mr Mayfield, amongst others.

But something doesn't seem to add up.

Say there was 100 million internet searches done on the day Heather says that the 'blogosphere was alight' with the John Prescott story. Then a peak 0.00088% share of searches on 'Iain Dale' amounts to 880 searches.

A tiny drop in the search ocean.

And if search accounted for 24% of traffic to Iain Dale's site, and blogs 19% - then less than 700 people come via other blogs. An impressive total for the blogosphere, given, but not exactly setting the world on fire.

And a company like Hitwise wouldn't have any vested interest in drumming up business by trying to convince PR budget holders to splash out on monitoring and reporting would it?!?

The point of this ramble, if there is one, is that bloggers are always tempted to trumpet the latest stats that seem to herald their cause without hardly pause for second thought. That's only natural, and good for encouraging debate, but a healthy degree of scepticism wouldn't go amiss.

Selective representation of stats can often belie common sense experience. After all, the Sun can claim the highest ABC readership in the UK, but you wouldn't tell your clients that you're going to prioritise the red tops over the broadsheets for CEO press interviews, would you?

But then again, I don't think I've met a flack that hasn't bent the truth at some stage in his or her career. Seems to go with the territory.

PR Hitwise Iain Dale

Dib dib dob, have I got rubbish news for you

Is nothing sacred from agencies trying to make a quick PR buck? A quick straw poll of different agents would probably give some interesting insight based on the annecdotal evidence given by hundreds or thousands of previous candidates.

Some recuitment agencies refuse to work with certain agencies, and many have 'black lists' of the worst sweat shops and down right horrific places to work.

So why not? As a junior, your first move is often a springboard for your career, so any information you can get that goes beyond the shiny facade that PR shops put up would be invaluable.

However, there are apparently conflicts between these two products and the only solution was to try and run Girlfriend 1.0 with the sound turned off.

To make matters worse, Girlfriend 1.0 is incompatible with several other applications, such as Boys Night Out 3.1, Football 4.5,and Playboy 6.9. Successive versions of Girlfriend proved no better. I tried a shareware program, Slapper 2.1, but it had many bugs and left a virus in my system, forcing me to shut down completely for several weeks.

Eventually, I tried to run Girlfriend 1.2 and Girlfriend 1.0 at the same time, only to discover that when these two systems detected each other, they caused severe damage to my hardware. I eventually upgraded to Fiancée 1.0, only to discover that this product soon had to be upgraded further to Wife 1.0.

While Wife 1.0 tends to use up all my available resources, it does come bundled with FreeSexPlus and Cleanhouse2003.

Shortly after this upgrade, however, I found that Wife1.0 could be very unstable and costly to run. Any mistakes I made were automatically stored in Wife 1.0's memory and could not be deleted. They then resurfaced months later when I had forgotten about them.

Wife 1.0 also has an automatic Diary, Explorer and E-mail Filter, and can, without warning, launch TurboStrop and Whinge. These latter products have no Help files, and I have to try to guess what the problem is. Additional problems are that Wife 1.0 needs updating regularly, requiring ShoeShop Browser for new attachments and HairstyleExpress which needs to be reinstalled every other week.

Wife 1.0 also spawns unwelcome child processes that drain my resources. These conflicts with some of the new games I wanted to try out, warning me that they are an illegal operation. Also, when Wife 1.0 attaches itself to my Audi TT hard drive, it often crashes.

Wife 1.0 also comes with an irritating pop-up called Mother-In-Law, which can't be turned off.

Recently I've been tempted to install Mistress 2003, but there could be problems. A friend of mine has alerted me to the fact that if Wife 1.0 detects Mistress 2003; it tends to delete all of your Money before installing itself.

Any ideas?

PR Inner Geek

Where did it all go wrong?

At the PRCA conference last week, Jackie Elliot reminded everyone that in the 80s and 90s PR was the number one career choice for graduates. Quite where it sits today in the league table of preferred choices I don't know - but needless to say it isn't number one, and almost definitely isn't in the top 10.

I'm sure someone out there has compiled the relevant info, but I thought I'd let Google Trends do the work:

Green= 'chav', red= 'accountancy', orange= 'civil service', blue= 'public relations'

PR's stock really has fallen to a new low (interestingly though, it's still more popular than 'fisherman' (by a thin margin), so at least no-one needs lose any sleep if Captain Birdseye sets up his own agency).

What does all this mean? It means that those obnoxious self-obsessed PRs you occassionally bump into who think that they ARE making a difference and secretly believe that their friends are jealous of the power they wield, are in fact full of s**t - Google Trends says so. Just remind them that people are more interested in the civil service than his/her industry, and that becoming a chavved-up accountant is an almost cast-iron guarantee of minor celebrity-hood.

It also means that those agencies hell bent on turning the industry into nothing more than a purveyor of low-margin commidity services based on a sweatshop production model should be first up against the wall when the revolution comes. Graduates want to be consultants, not glorified call centre agents.

There are already too many McPR 2.0 agencies out there doing a 'Wal-Mart' to PR.

Blah, blah, blah.

Tell us something we don't know.

It did make the PR monkey smile when Peter Jones, head of comms at BUPA, shared his recollections of reading a book about the end of the 'gin & tonic man', and it's message about the need to respond to change in the PR industry - written some 25 years' ago!!!

It was also refreshing to hear BT's Peter Morgan tell it like it is. He gave some interesting insight as to how most PR agencies pitch in completely the wrong way and don't understand how to sell themselves. He also shot Crispin Manners down when the silver fox misquoted him when asking an accusatory question. Brilliant. (The PR monkey had its own case of the effluentials on holiday after eating a dodgy goat curry).

Since then, the world has gone crazy with Jargon 2.0 - which has given birth to some interestingly named 'new meedja' PR service offerings:

Me2Revolution - jumping on your bandwagon
PR+ - good, could do better, with a little extra effort could have been PS-
PR 2.0 - still in beta

There must be more of these out there? Whereas South Korea, which is arguably the most advanced networked society in the world, believes in the word of the blog. But then again, this is the nation that brought you Moonies.

These survey results are perhaps a little more interesting than Edleman's Annual Trust Barometer, as they detail the levels of distrust in each country. The findings of both reports vary, but they do agree on one thing - Brazilians really distrust blogs and you're much more likely to successfully deliver your corporate message in Brazil by hiring an entertainer/athelete (only Edleman could lump these categories together - and it begs the question: could Pele become the virtual voice of god if he ticked both boxes by hosting Brazil's equivalent of Family Fortunes?).

The trouble is, bloggers are generally unaccountable and difficult to sue (as the Rubloid discusses here). Whereas MSM can be held financially accountable through the capital of trust - whether that's subscriptions, adverstising or libel.

In my mind, no amount of self-aggrandized blogging ethics will evert compete with cold hard cash as a way of engendering trust. Just ask any MSM publisher how important reader/viewer/listener trust is to their business.

For blogs to be trusted, they need to be financially accountable - and that means more than just the odd paid-listing click thru.

So if anyone would like to send a small donation to the PR monkey to keep him honest, you're more than welcome... :)

PR trust blogging

The old ones...

...aren't always the best.

Remember the terminally annoying Ariston... and on.... and on... German electro-punk adverts in the early 1990s brought to you by Giuliano Gnagnati, the then UK MD?

Well, Intel and HP have decided to resurrect this jaunty little catchphrase in a joint marketing venture for Itanium and Integrity.

Not so much a Phoenix from the flames as a recycled turd from the sewage treatment plant.

PR Electropunk

Google bashing

The saying that revenge is a dish best solved cold is rubbish. Europe = UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

An interesting shortlist given that Eastern Europe has some of the continent's fastest growing economies and will increasingly be a vital market for companies struggling to sustain revenue growth in Western Europe's saturated, mature markets. For example, mobile subscriber growth in Eastern Europe will be roughly 2-3 times AsiaPac's over the next couple of years (according to the GSMA). It would therefore have been nice to have had Edleman's thoughts on 'trust' strategies for Western brands entering new Eastern markets.

2. Gary Grates (pictured on pg 18) has a classic moustache. It's a shame that he's in a straight-on pose as it looks like he could be sporting a mullet to complete his folicle exuberance

3. In Europe, PR people are fractionally more trusttworthy than bloggers (who are the least trusted source of opinion)

4. Entertainers / atheletes are the least trusted source in the US, Asia and Canada. Whereas in Brazil, these chaps come higher than lawyers and unions

PR trust moustache

The Law of Mobility, but not as we know it

Reading this blog this morning reminded me of McGuire's Law of Mobility.

Ross McGuire is director of business strategy at Sprint. Back in December of last year he published a whitepaper on the Law of Mobility (well worth a read - and not too tech).

McGuire's argument is essentially that the mobility of the 'product experience' significantly increases its (the product's) value.

For example, a 2inch TV screen is virtually worthless - until you embed it into a device that everyone carriers in their pocket, i.e. the mobile phone. Crackberrys are another great example where people are willing to pay for being able to manage email on the move, even though the device experience is worse than using Outlook on your desktop.

But reading TrailerParkRave sparked a thought that McGuire's Law of Mobility should be extended to include the 'service experience'. Mobilising a service signficantly increases its value - whether mobility means the service is network bearer agnostic (i.e. a user session can be seamlessly handed off between fixed and wireless networks without any service interruption or degredation), or that the service can be consumed in your-time (a la video iPod) and on any device (content adaption). A truly mobilised service can be accessed and consumed whenever, wherever and on whatever you like.

And, over time, the 'product experience' will become subserviant to service mobility through device convergence.

There are some signficant technology hurdles to overcome, one of the hardest being user session mobility, but service mobility will probably become a reality towards the end of the decade when operators have rolled out IMS and we all have cheap, universal access to wireless broadband.

And you thought that all that went through monkey minds was bananas, trees and humping.

Oooh, ooh.

PR mobility convergence

Comments are now on...

...for all those kind enough to have dropped your floaters off at the pool. No punster headline, but nonetheless a reference to the corrosive power of the UK's favourite meal.

Still, I was half expecting a reference to another cause of 'ring of fire' which various members of the team had fallen foul to during the tour. What was commonly referred to as Aztec Two-Step by the England 1986 World Cup team (held in Mexico - for those to young to remember, bless).

Delicious irony - ring of fire almost destroys the tour, and then inspires victory.

Still, if you play with curry...

PR cricket Aztec

Sound-bite-tastic

They might have been months in development, but there's a couple of corkers in response to today's budget.

"Billions raised, billions spent. It came up in conversation that the client had just appointed us and was really excited about starting to take the company's story out to the media. The journo, curious about things PR, asked who else had been on the pitch list. The client mentioned one of the UK's top tech PR firms (who shall remain anonymous - monkeys aren't like bunnys). On hearing the name of the PR shop, the journalist told the client exactly what he and all his colleagues think of this agency, the fact they delete incoming emails without looking at them, won't return calls, etc, etc.

I'm not sure what I find more shocking: the fact that this agency has been blacklisted by one of the top trade titles; or the fact that they clearly haven't realised yet.

An agency that can't build and maintain relationships with the media shouldn't be in business. The list below shows search engines and their estimated coverage of the web (i.e. the percentage actually indexed):

Google - 69.6%
Yahoo! - 57.4%
Ask - 46.1%
MSN - 44.3%

It prompts the question: if we're all going to be myspace blogging joga junkies (as Web 2.0 sycophants would have us believe), exponentially increasing the amount of info out there, then will there be a point at which the percentage of the web indexed by Google et al actually decrease as we hit saturation point? Will the inane droppings of a PR monkey floating in the meme pool fall on deaf ears as no-one can acutally find anything? Will this floater push us over the edge?

Or will we need aggregators who go out there and distill what's interesting / important? But there was none of the usual shamrocks and shenanigans for these folk.

Clearly these drinks were the result of a flawed brainstorming session.

Cutting to the chase, the brains behind the event decided it was appropriate to name a cocktail 'The Irish Car Bomb'.

It appears the thing they thought of when conjuring with the concept of Irishness was the brutal terror campaign of the IRA during the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

Nice. Pats on the back all round for everybody involved in that one.

Of course, today of all days, many Irish families tire of the usual, all-too-easily-wheeled-out stereotypes.

But the Round-Up isn't convinced that offering to replace these with the imagery of terrorist atrocities is really any more of a positive step forward.

Tags: PR
